Updated 5 Oct 2026 · 1 min read

Every lawyer lists the areas of law they work in on their profile, and can add narrower specialisations under each one.

Area or specialisation?

An area of law is a broad field — family, employment or immigration law, for example. There are ten on CasePilot.

A specialisation is a narrower topic within one area. Under family law that might be divorce, child custody or child support. Each specialisation belongs to one area.

In Practice area, choose an area first. Its specialisations only appear once you have. Leave them all unticked and you'll see every lawyer in that area.

Where they appear on a profile

A lawyer's profile has a Practice areas section, with the specialisations listed under each area. The main areas also sit at the top of the profile, under Works on.

Tip

You don't need to know the legal name for your problem. Pick the area that fits best and describe the rest in your inquiry or your booking.
